You’ve got to Move It!

Historically, humans have had to work hard to survive. Movement was critical for our ability to survive. We needed to follow herds, forage for food, harvest food, find and build shelters and run from danger. Our genes adapted to this lifestyle over half a million years. Today, our world is much different. We live in a built up environment full of technology that takes activity out of our life. Today’s world is unnatural in comparison to how we have evolved to survive. Dr. David Katz likens our current existence to dropping a polar bear into the Sahara Desert. "We are not equipped genetically to handle the modern setting of fast-food restaurants, vending machines, elevators and video games." The result is an increasingly overweight and obese society with increased risk for diseases such as cancer, heart disease, stroke, high blood pressure, kidney disease, arthritis, and diabetes (the list of diseases goes on).

The American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM) has established recommendations for physical activity for weight loss and health. Physical activity is so important to wellness and disease prevention that ACSM promotes the campaign Exercise is Medicine ™ to encourage physicians and health care providers to address physical activity with all patients.

There is a world of activity out there, find your place in it!
